The quintessential American landmark mysteriously lost its lighting Tuesday night.
For what it's worth, if someone cut the power to the statue of liberty as a protest of immigration policy, that would be just stunning.— David Solimini (@CommsDirector) March 8, 2017
An EarthCam live stream showed Lady Liberty almost completely engulfed in darkness, with the exceptions of her Torch and Crown, which remain illuminated.
A National Parks Service spokesperson said the blackout was a technical glitch.
“We believe it is related to the activation of a new emergency backup generator which is being installed as a part of our last remaining hurricane Sandy recovery project,” the spokesperson said.
The lights went back on sometime after 11:30 p.m.
While waiting for an official reason for the outage, many wondered if it was intentional.
Some people thought this was related to #DayWithoutAWoman and #WomensMarch
